As I wrap up my experience at the Polyglot Conference Global, I wanted to focus on one of the most thought-provoking discussions I had during the event: the preservation of languages. With languages vanishing at an alarming rate worldwide, the topic of language preservation was both urgent and inspiring. It was a central theme of many conversations I had with fellow polyglots, linguists, and educators, who shared innovative ideas and strategies for preserving the languages that define our cultures and identities.
Language... as cultural heritage.
One of the first things I learned from these discussions was the deep connection between language and culture. Many of the polyglots I met at the conference spoke about how language is more than just a means of communication—it’s a vessel for history, traditions, and unique worldviews. Losing a language often means losing access to centuries of knowledge, cultural practices, and local wisdom that have been passed down through generations. As a result, many speakers are dedicated to finding ways to revitalize and preserve their languages, from creating educational resources to forming language communities that can continue to keep these languages alive.
For instance, I learned about grassroots initiatives where communities are working together to document and teach endangered languages, often using modern tools like social media, apps, and online platforms. These efforts not only help preserve vocabulary and grammar but also allow younger generations to feel connected to their linguistic heritage. The conference was a reminder that language preservation is not just the responsibility of linguists or governments; it’s a collective effort that requires active participation from the people who speak the language.
Technology’s Role in Language Preservation
Another theme that emerged during the conference was the crucial role that technology can play in language preservation. As someone passionate about languages, it was exciting to see how digital tools are helping to make endangered languages more accessible. One example that stood out to me was the creation of digital archives, where rare and endangered languages are being recorded and shared in online databases for future generations. Additionally, apps and platforms that facilitate language learning are being adapted to include these endangered languages, ensuring that they don’t fade into obscurity.
Several speakers at the conference discussed how technology can not only help preserve languages but also make learning them easier for a global audience. This is particularly valuable for languages that are spoken by small communities but have a rich cultural heritage. Through platforms like Duolingo, Memrise, and others, learners can access resources and immerse themselves in languages they may not have otherwise encountered. This digital revolution has brought attention to the importance of safeguarding linguistic diversity and allowed people from all walks of life to engage with endangered languages in ways that were once unimaginable.
Additionally, I'd like to take this opportunity to shout out to my new language conservation platform, tujiatutorials.com! I've worked with local Tujia communities to create a site where people interested in Tujia may come together to learn and help to preserve it - updates coming soon!
The Power of Community in Language Preservation
Perhaps the most important lesson I learned at the Polyglot Conference Global was that language preservation is deeply tied to community. During the event, I met several polyglots who are actively involved in language preservation efforts. From Indigenous language activists to researchers working with local communities, each person shared how preserving a language requires more than just formal education—it requires a collective commitment. Language communities, both online and offline, play an essential role in keeping languages alive.
Globally, there are community-led language immersion programs where native speakers teach their language to younger generations in a natural, supportive environment. This approach is particularly effective in places where the language is at risk of dying out, as it fosters a sense of belonging and pride in the language. By creating spaces for speakers to use their language regularly, these programs help ensure that it remains vibrant and relevant for future generations.
It was inspiring to see how communities around the world are coming together to keep their languages alive, and I left the conference feeling more motivated than ever to contribute to this cause.
A Heartfelt Thanks to National Youth Council Singapore
Before I end this post, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the National Youth Council Singapore for awarding me the Youth Leadership Development Grant. This grant has provided me with the opportunity to attend the Polyglot Conference Global and maximize the impact of my learning experience. Through this blog series, I hope to not only share the knowledge I’ve gained but also inspire others, especially youth, to become more involved in language preservation and learning.
The conference has given me the tools and insights to foster a deeper connection to languages and culture, and I am committed to encouraging interest in languages, especially among young people in Singapore. Language is a powerful tool for understanding the world and building bridges across communities, and it is crucial that we continue to nurture a society that values linguistic diversity.
Looking ahead...
As I continue my journey as a hyperpolyglot, I carry with me a renewed sense of purpose when it comes to language preservation. The Polyglot Conference Global not only broadened my understanding of language learning but also deepened my commitment to helping preserve the languages that are at risk of being forgotten. I believe that by fostering a language community—both locally and globally—we can ensure that linguistic diversity continues to thrive.
Moving forward, I am excited to apply what I’ve learned to initiatives in Singapore and beyond, supporting efforts to preserve languages, encourage multilingualism, and inspire future generations of language learners. Thank you again to everyone who made this journey possible, and I look forward to sharing more about my language adventures in the future.
